In fact, it actively discourages it, if not outright punishes it. Good, well-made things happen on YouTube, of course, but every incentive on the app is pushing users to be more and more cutthroat. MrBeast is what happens if you give yourself over entirely to the algorithm. You end up with something gaudy, embarrassing, and consumed almost entirely by 12-year-old boys. To be “good” at YouTube, as in successful according to their own metrics, you must actively resist all the hallmarks of what would make a TV show or movie successful. You can’t care about plot, or jokes, or scripts, or sets, or costumes, or even storytelling.
